When pertaining to media sources, it is typical for the message to be altered and displayed in a manner that suits the eye of society. Personally, I feel as though that the satirical version of news reporting is presented in such a way that the message is left completely as it is, which creates a legitimate form of culture jamming. In turn, it should definitely be seen as a quality source of information and still receive the same level of validity as any other news reporting show.
The Daily show and the Mercer report are great examples of satirical news reports and how they present the news in a creative and comedic way. “Cultural jamming techniques can also be used simply to be clever or funny, with or without a political or critical motive” (Pg 214) Presenting the messages with a comical frame of view it can uplift the audience and help them keep focused with what the message is intended to be. By doing so, messages to the public come off as they should, and are not sugar coated to meet expectations. It could be noted that cultural jamming is in fact needed to complete this satirical reporting for it to be seen as legitimate.
I feel as though that this satirical form of news reporting plays a crucial role in being apart of the public sphere. Just ask yourself what the world would be like without it? Often times, telling the news requires a shift to the norm and a satirical way does just that. It helps target individuals who enjoy humour from what’s normally presented as humourless stories and opens their minds to a different belief. “Inadequate is how the media makes you feel so you desire what they are selling.” (Pg 216) By presenting the media with the satirical frame, it targets those individuals who may not have been interested before, and sells them on the comedic but legitimate story they tell.
In conclusion I feel as though that satirical news reporting is in fact a mainstream form of cultural jamming in the way that it presents itself. I will and have always watched this form of reporting. I view this as a legitimate source for keeping up to date with the happenings of our world and do so with a smile on my face.
